Sandy Dalal

Sandy Dalal was born in the Bronx in 1976 and raised in Manhattan. His education in textile and clothing started in his late teenage years while working on various projects for his mother’s boutique textile agency. His breaks during the school year were often filled with apprenticeships in and around New York City. Under the gracious, yet rigorous tutelage of various sample rooms and factories, Sandy developed his interest and skill in fashion and textile design. Sandy began designing his first collection for men during the summer of his sophomore year at the University of Pennsylvania. A year later in 1997, supported by the very factories where he learned his craft, Sandy launched his eponymous label at his first fashion show during New York Fashion Week.

A confluence of timeless tailored shapes, classic artisan techniques with innovative materials and daring use of color and texture, the collection introduced a distinctly youthful and modern outlook that quickly attracted fans and clients both in Sandy’s generation as well as seasoned consumers of luxury fashion. The brand enjoyed rapid growth and in just 3 years, the collection was available in over 400 well-respected boutiques worldwide. The quality of his work has been described as displaying “a maturity far beyond his years.”

Sandy has had the honor of receiving numerous accolades for his distinctive work, including at 21, being the youngest ever recipient of the CFDA’s (Council of Fashion Designers of America) prestigious Perry Ellis Award for New Talent in 1997, the Fashion Group International’s (FGI) Rising Star Award and Details Magazine’s 100 Most Dynamic Men. He has been profiled and reviewed in countless journals and magazines – from the New York Times to Le Monde, from ID to Index and The New Yorker to People.

In 2004, Sandy launched Chatav Ectabit, a collection of unisex, handmade, one-of-a-kind clothing and items for interiors with Cliff Fong. The collection is steeped in an idea that true luxury lies in having an item that has been created outside an industrial system, individually addressed and without replica. The collection’s identity is defined by marrying new materials and age-old craft. Noble yarns hand woven with a variety of obscure ones, hand tanned leathers, nuanced colors created by using house made natural pigments, subtle manual treatments and unexpected details such as hand cast vintage silver hooks, hand carved buttons and repurposed vintage embroideries and linings make this collection a very unique creative endeavor and a favorite of clients worldwide.

In 2016, Sandy and Cliff introduce Ville Noire, a new retail store in Los Angeles. Ville Noire will offer a collection of beautifully produced bed linen, home accessories and select furniture with the unique “loved-in” sensibility that Sandy and Cliff are known for.

Sandy serves as creative director for a select group of brands and advises companies and entrepreneurs globally in fashion, fitness apparel, interior design, hospitality, technology, fine art, education and their investments/m&a in these sectors.

Sandy lives with his family in New York.
