Mimi So

MiMi So was born and raised on the Lower East Side of New York City. There, she found herself at the intersection of dual worlds: one, an exciting neighborhood defined by its vibrant melting pot of diverse cultures, and two, her parents’ fine jewelry atelier, where she adopted an appreciation for the discipline and beauty of exquisite craftsmanship. As a girl, she spent her days surrounded by the energy of Latin music, boisterous basketball courts and the unique vernacular of raw, urban street style.

She envisioned that one day, she would create a namesake brand galvanized by the myriad influences of her formative experiences in the city. This impulse led her to Parsons School of Design to pursue a career in design.

In 1998, she realized her dream and launched the MIMI SO jewelry brand. Neiman Marcus soon took note of her trailblazing designs, and introduced her within their roster of top designers in 2000. Four years later, her unique vision caught the eye of Mr. Johann Rupert, Chairman of luxury conglomerate Richemont. Rupert recognized her potential to become a legacy brand and crowned her Richemont’s first American jewelry investment. In 2007, Richemont offered to purchase a majority stake in the brand.  She declined the offer, and opted to grow her company on her own, authentically and in stride with her personal vision of a veritable lifestyle brand.

MIMI SO jewels are featured in leading fashion and lifestyle publications, worn by A-list celebrities and collected by loyal clients who value her uncompromising attention to quality, detail and modern design.

Inspired by personal journeys, contemporary art, fashion, and her travels, the designer  infuses her playful spirit —  a refreshing balance of sophistication and whimsy — into her signature collections. Each piece is conceived and expertly handcrafted in her New York City atelier, in the heart of the jewelry district.  There, private clients come to experience the designer’s hospitality, creativity and an exclusive peek into the renaissance style of craftsmanship in process at the workshop.

The designer has a distinctive eye for style and fashion that is recognized by editors, retailers, celebrities and stylists. Today, she serves on CFDA’s Board of Directors, mentoring passionate young entrepreneurs with a drive similar to hers.

Her life philosophy is “to be positive, happy, to empower others, and to believe in yourself. My happiness is creating beauty for others to admire and enjoy.”

MiMi So has been a CFDA Member since 2007.
