Malia Mills

A kick-ass voice in the fashion industry, Malia Mills celebrates women with an inclusive and inspiring dialogue on the subject of individual beauty. Much more than a swimsuit brand or store, Malia Mills is an empowering way to see what is right in the mirror instead of what is wrong. As Malia says, “When you feel like a rockstar in a swimsuit, there is nothing you can’t accomplish!”

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii – a mecca for swimwear and an auspicious start for the future designer, she spent her teenage years in Hanover, New Hampshire. She studied apparel design at Cornell University and also fashion design in Paris at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

After working as an assistant designer at Jessica McClintock in San Francisco, Malia packed up her pick-up truck and drove to New York City. When not waitressing at downtown New York’s stylish gathering place – Odeon, she was in her apartment cutting and sewing swimwear samples that took their precise fit from lingerie, imbued with a strong fashion touch.

In 1993, Harper’s Bazaar featured Cindy Crawford in a signature mini corset and hipster brief cut from a shiny, stretch woven fabric used to make vintage girdles. Mills quit her waitressing job and Malia Mills swimwear could soon be found in over 125 specialty stores around the world, from Barneys New York to Barneys Japan; from Neiman Marcus to Harvey Nichols, and even the Aman Resorts. Today, Malia Mills is sold exclusively in company-owned Malia Mills boutiques and the e-commerce site offers a 24 hour immersive MM experience to everyone, everywhere.

Mills’ swimwear is an extension of an edgy chic wardrobe – separate tops and bottoms in luscious fabrics such as cool satins, dark velvets, and crisp cottons. Badass colors, textures and prints are meant to dress up and down like the clothes in your closet. With love they differencesTM as her mantra, her mission, her driving force, Mills empowered gals to celebrate their individual style with killer fit and fabrics.

Malia Mills’ focus on celebrating and empowering women also extends to the people involved in making each style. Nearly all of the production takes place in New York and New Jersey. And in an effort to support more women and communities worldwide, the company began an initiative to make ready to wear in India. As women prosper, so prospers the world.

The Malia Mills collection continues to expand, each piece created to spread good chi all the way. Mills designs signature ready to wear apparel for an on-the-go, “hell yes we can!” lifestyle, which goes from the city to holiday and back again. Draped dresses, tailored rompers, slouchy blouses and trousers are washable and wearable ten thousand different ways – making it easier to get out there and seize the day.
