Jason Wu

Jason Wu is a leading global design talent based in New York City.Through merging classic American sportswear elements with a refined couture sensibility, he has created an internationally recognized brand in just 10 years.

Since debuting his Ready-to-Wear collection in 2007, Wu has been dedicated to making clothes that are beautifully crafted from the inside out. With a focus on exquisite quality and traditional craftsmanship, much of Wu’s collection is manufactured in New York using custom developed fabrics from the finest mills in France and Italy.

As a child, Wu began using dolls as mannequins to learn how to sew after his mother bought his first sewing machine. The miniature-d scale of the mannequins trained him to be in tune with every minute detail of his designs.

The designer has already achieved many of his aspirations. His collection is sold globally and he dresses some of the most influential women in the world, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Diane Kruger, Liu Wen and Christy Turlington, amongst many others.

The designer has received many accolades. He was a 2008 finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. He won the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards, and the following year, he was nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Award for Accessory Design.

He also served as Artistic Director of Hugo Boss womenswear Ready to Wear and Accessory collection for five years. More recently, Wu was honored with the Fashion Star Award at The Fashion Group International Night of Stars 2015, and he won the 2016 International Designer of Year at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards.

Today, he continues on the same path, striving for perfection in his collection where he must start working 5-6 months in advance of their presentation. Over 90 percent of his fabrics are produced in Italy and France, most of which are designed for and exclusive to Wu. Each season he creates unique prints based on the inspiration of the season and frequently explores new and innovative ways of printing them onto fabric. His many intricate embellishments take up to 5 months to create. The signature feather details are created at Lemarie in Paris and can take several months to custom dye and burnout, which adds lightness to the garments. For embroidered pieces, custom sequins are often created and hand-applied onto garments, sometimes taking up to 1000 hours. By using old world couture techniques with a modern eye, he is able to create singular designs that are distinctly Jason Wu.

Jason Wu has been a CFDA Member since 2009.
