Gloria Sachs

Gloria Sachs held a BS from Skidmore College in Fine Arts, and was the first Skidmore graduate to be awarded an Honorary PhD, Doctor of Letters. She attended the graduate program at Cranbrook Academy of Art, the painting studio of F. Leger in Paris, and was an apprentice to Gio Ponti at Domus magazine in Milan.

Early work included designing textiles for Hans Knoll and Herman Miller, specifically for Charles Eames and George Nelson. Her first commissioned work was from Phillip Johnson at the Museum of Modern Art in New York to design the fabric for their Members’ Lounge. She continued to design textiles, developing extraordinary horsehair fabric which was woven for her on special looms in China. Her most recent project was to design special horsehair fabric for the furniture of the reception area of the Park Hyatt Hotel in the Shanghai World Financial Center, the tallest completed building in the world.

Additionally, she created Gloria Sachs Designs Ltd., an exceptional company that exemplified the joining of business and the fine arts. As one of the nation’s leading and most influential fashion designers, she was one of the few designers to forge successful relationships in the many sectors of business and the arts. Gloria Sachs served as a member of the Cultural and Economic Council for the City of New York. Ms. Sachs was one of the first women invited to be a member of the prestigious Economic Club. As President of the Fashion Group International and a major leader in the industry, she played a significant role in expanding membership overseas. The membership now includes 6,000 worldwide industry leaders.

Most recently, Ms. Sachs worked with architects, designers, and collectors through her private gallery which specializes in contemporary Chinese art, modern calligraphy, furniture, and textiles. She is recently collaborated with China’s leading architects, Pei Zhu, Calvin Tsao and the renown historian- Wu Hung. Together they prepared a museum show on Beijing: the Olympian city as it sits on its “ancient footprints”.
