Christian Roth

Christian Roth designs the groundbreaking eponymous eyewear label with Eric Domege. Today, the CHRISTIAN ROTH label is part of the DITA Group. The partnership, which includes expanded distribution and new opportunities for production and design advances, “allows Christian Roth to rediscover its heritage with new eyes.”

Roth and Domege first met in New York in the early 1980s. Sensing a void in the market, the designers launched Christian Roth for Optical Affairs in 1984 and quickly found fans among the likes of Andy Warhol and Karl Lagerfeld, who invited Roth to design the eyewear for his runway presentations in 1985. The brand soon became a mainstay of the gritty downtown New York fashion scene, gracing some of fashion’s most famous faces along the way: supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Linda Evangelista, grunge darlings Kate Moss and Kurt Cobain, music innovators Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige. An eclectic crowd of fashion editors, photographers, stylists, and artists commingled at Roth’s Union Square showroom, designed by French designer Denis Colomb.

Roth continued designing eyewear for Karl Lagerfeld and soon began collaborating with designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Stephen Sprouse, and Michael Kors. “This was a time before every designer had an eyewear license,” Roth explained. Christian Roth was the first eyewear designer to join the CFDA, and became a founding executive member and the spokesperson of Eyewear Designers of the CFDA (edCFDA) in 2014.

Today, Roth and Domege design the collection from their studios in the south of France and in Miami Beach.

Christian Roth has been a CFDA Member since 1990.
