Andre Walker

Andre Walker is a London-born, New York-raised Designer, Creative Director, Publisher, Cultural Commentator, Stylist and Artist with a 45-year career creating seminal fashion, shoes, accessories, painting and mixed media.

Having captured the interest of none other than the pioneering street photographer Bill Cunningham, teenage Andre found himself featured in prominent publications like the New York Times and Details. He became a regular subject of interest for Kim Hastreiter/PAPER magazine, Andy Warhol, and the downtown scene of New York City in the early to mid-eighties with his shows, highlighting an often-comedically self-taught approach to clothing design and its presentation.

Walker was invited to Paris in 1991, showing several of his own collections intermittently and working as a stylist. In 1997, he met Marc Jacobs on a Paris sidewalk where they started sharing thoughts and ideas. Eventually the two began working together, with Andre providing comprehensive design and image direction for the Louis Vuitton women’s and men’s collections and honing his creative advisory skills. This led to his being honored with the distinguished ANDAM prize, presented by the French Ministry of Culture, for his Spring/Summer 2001 collection.
Leaving Paris for New York in 2004, Andre began working with Kim Jones as a design consultant when Marc Jacobs serendipitously asked him to again provide design and image consulting as he’d done in Paris. This period in New York began one of his most prolific & favorite times, styling for magazines and simultaneously freelancing with emerging designers.

It was during this period, Walker, being an avid magazine collector, turned his sights to publishing. He invited not only his friends but a varied and unexpected group of creatives to contribute to his first-ever magazine project – what he envisioned as a thinking, feeling, visual experiment. The result was the “Objectzine” TIWIMUTA “This Is What it Makes Us Think
About.”

With contributions from a roster of established, emerging, and unsuspecting creatives, the bespoke collectible included several paper stocks, crafted metal covers & unconventional formats which deeply encouraged the physical & tactile to be as much a part of the experience as the printed matter itself.

Walker has a spirit for the improvised, historical and the ‘unseen’; and is known for his obsession with creativity and design. His presence has been highly influential in cultivating an environment for creative freedom — what he describes as “progressive experimentation”. This approach has been the catalyst for inter-collaborative projects with, among others, Rei Kawakubo, Adrian Joffe, Comme des Garcons, Dover Street Market, Paige Powell, Pendleton, Lucien Pagès, Yves Salomon, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Virgil Abloh’s Off-White.

Andre is the recipient of the 2025 Isabel Toledo Board of Directors Tribute from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco. A self-professed quack and fervent artist, he is an exponent of sketching and painting as the true catalysts of creation, even more so than cultural articulation.

Lauded by established cultural icons Andre Leon-Talley, Andy Warhol, and Kim Hastreiter, et al, Walker’s efforts have accumulated a body of work dense enough to sustain his ongoing contributions to the boundary pushing world of fashion design and creative expression well into
the future.
