The decade leading up to 2007 was marked by the glaring omission of black models on fashion runways throughout the world. Bethann Hardison called attention to this issue and has been instrumental in guiding the diversity conversation since, by holding the fashion industry accountable. In July 2008 Bethann helped to develop and edit the ground breaking and highly successful “All Black Issue” of Vogue Italia and two years later Bethann Hardison was named Editor-At-Large for Vogue Italia’s digital platform. The activist continues to call for more diversity, having said, “To not accept diversity hurts everyone. It hurts the fashion industry. It hurts society.”
In September 2013 Bethann led the Diversity Coalition, an informal organization that developed the Balance Diversity initiative, created to consistently improve racial diversity in the fashion industry permanently. Bethann has been featured in Target’s Black History “Dream in Color” ads in 2009 and the recent HBO documentary “About Face.” She is currently developing a documentary titled “Invisible Beauty,” which takes a behind the scenes look at the fashion industry and diversity.
Bethann Hardison currently maintains management for Tyson Beckford and Kadeem Hardison. She also spearheaded “When Fashion Danced,” the 2013 retrospective of fashion designer and style pioneer Stephen Burrows on display at The Museum of the City of New York. Her passion and motivation is sharing her expertise on the fashion and media industries to a broader audience through books and film documentation.
