The Hotel Chelsea has always been a legendary haunt for artists, creatives and the New York City demi-monde. Andy Warhol naturally frequented the hotel, often with Factory friends in tow, and on Thursday night, he was back – in spirit and via a very special curation of his photographs by Hedges Projects celebrated with a CFDA and Vogue100 Dinner and Sale hosted by Aurora James.

James, who is a Vice Chair of the CFDA Board, played a key role in bringing this moment to life. She introduced her good friend Jim Hedges to CFDA CEO Steven Kolb with the idea to curate and sell a special collection of Hedges’ Warhol photographs with a portion of proceeds benefiting the CFDA Foundation, Inc.

“Luckily,” James told the dinner guests, “this idea came into fruition, which is why we are all here, in partnership with Vogue100 and the Friends of the CFDA program. The collection of photographs feature a few of our favorite fashion icons – André Leon Talley, Diana Vreeland, Diane von Furstenberg, and Diane Brill…”

“Oh yes, oh thank god,” exclaimed Brill, the 1980s downtown club fixture whom Warhol himself dubbed the “Queen of the Night.”

Indeed, cultural icons from the New York nightlife scene and the fashion world were central to Warhol’s Pop Art oeuvre and the artist often captured designers and fashion notables with a Polaroid camera, including Halston, Stephen Sprouse, Tina Chow, Deeda Blair, Grace Jones, Bianca Jagger, Michael Chow, Valentino, all of whom are also represented in the sale at Artsy.

Guests included Darren Star, Allison Sarofim, James Frazier, Lisa Sher-Chambers and John Chambers, Ann Dexter Jones, Bethann Hardison, Henry Zankov, Ann Kaplan, Laurence Milstein, Cathy Ho Lee, Legendary Damon, Ezra J. William, Karen Friedman, Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell, Molly Middleton, Yao King, Janet Mandell, Macrene Alexiades, Megan Blaze, Hayley Sullivan, Sebastien Amisial, and more.

Hedges, for his part, has collected Warhol photographs for a long time.

“When I moved to New York 30 years ago, I started meeting people that were in Warhol’s inner circle, painting more and more of a picture not only of who Warhol was but also what was happening in the late Seventies and early 1980s in New York City,” Hedges said. “It was a confluence of influences that was never seen before in the history of the United States. The relationship between Warhol and fashion is undeniable.

“I wanted to pull together a selection that represented some of the most iconic designers, like DVF and tastemakers such as Diana Vreeland and André Leon Talley and great consumers of fashion like Tina Chow and we got 25 photographs,” he added.

And each is incredible in its own right. Click here to view the sale.
