VATÍSIMO – the title of the collaboration between Zara and Willy Chavarria – is rooted in dignity. It is about visibility. It is about sharing Willy’s distinct vision with a wider audience.
So states the press statement for the collection, which was released on Monday. Vatisimo – the superlative form of “vato” – a colloquial term used in the Chicano community – honors friendship, camaraderie, and love; personal bonds, the pride of belonging to a community, and the power of roots.
Cue Chavarria’s sartorial imagination. Think American workwear and leisure of past decades via tailoring and silhouettes and Italian fabrics, leather, denim, knits, jerseys, and more.
The campaign, directed by Glen Luchford and Chavarria, is equally spellbinding. It stars Christy Turlington and Alberto Guerra in Mexico in scenes reminiscent of the intensity of telenovelas.
Think power, jealousy, desire. We’re here for it.
