Isaac Mizrahi’s ‘Unzipped’ Returns to Theaters, Set for September Release

One of fashion’s most memorable films is headed back to the big screen.

Janus Films acquired the North American rights to ‘Unzipped’, Douglas Keeve’s acclaimed 1995 documentary chronicling Isaac Mizrahi as he creates his Fall 1994 collection.

The newly restored 4K edition will open in New York on September 25 before expanding to theaters nationwide later this year.

Directed by Keeve, ‘Unzipped’ offers an intimate look inside the designer’s creative process, capturing the energy, pressure, and excitement of one of fashion’s defining eras – replete with supermodel cameos by Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Yasmeen Ghauri, Ambera Valletta, Shalom Harlow, and more.

Reflecting on the film’s enduring legacy, Keeve told the Sundance Institute, “I don’t like calling it a fashion documentary. I think it is a documentary about the creative process, about business, about passion.”

Mizrahi also reflected on the film’s lasting impact in an interview with Variety, saying, “Unzipped is a perfect encapsulation, a freezing in time forever, of the middle 1990s in the fashion business, a very happy time in my life.”

The re-release comes during milestone year for Mizrahi. In June, Target announced the designer as its first-ever Creative Director at Large, more than two decades after his groundbreaking 2002 designer collaboration with the retailer. In the new role, Mizrahi will help inspire fresh creative ideas, mentor Target’s design teams, and continue building on the style, design, and value that have long defined the brand.
