Ruthie Davis has long been committed to maintaining a micro environmental footprint.
Now, this passion has inspired the footwear designer to launch Bio by Ruthie Davis and incorporate a biobased leather material made from apple waste into her Spring 2025 collection.
Unlike traditional vegan leather, the cutting edge Uppeal™ by Mabel Industries material minimizes the use of fossil-based raw materials while being highly durable and animal-friendly.
The process of creating this unique material is equally fascinating. Uppeal™ uses waste produced by the apple juice and jam industries and avoids thousands of tons of skin, pulp, and seeds from being landfilled or incinerated. The waste is dehydrated into powder, which Mabel combines with polyurethane to capture the leather look and feel.
Davis is using this innovative material for two of her wearable heel heights: the classic “Candy” silhouette with a 5.75-inch platform heel and the new “Yardley” with a 4-inch single sole heel – both in all-black. The pricing is aligned with her collection to encourage customers to make sustainable choices and not scare them off by costs. As per the designer’s mantra, the future of fashion isn’t just about what you wear, but how it’s made.
“With Bio by Ruthie Davis, we’re stepping forward in style—strong, sleek, and sustainably chic,” Davies said. “We can make a bold statement in heels that are as kind to the earth as they are fierce on our feet.”
