UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

Endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights provide a global framework for preventing and addressing the adverse impacts of business activities on human rights. Developed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, the Principles are grounded in three pillars:

– The State duty to protect human rights

– The corporate responsibility to respect human rights

– Access to remedy for victims of business-related abuses

Applicable to all states and business enterprises – regardless of size, sector, or location – the Principles clarify expectations and promote accountability. They emphasize transparency, due diligence, and the need for effective grievance mechanisms, aiming to align business practices with international human rights standards and contribute to a socially sustainable global economy.
