Scope 1 Emissions
Scope 1 Emissions in fashion refers to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are directly related to a brand’s activities and are within their control. While a smaller portion of the industry’s total carbon footprint, these sources can include fuel combustion in boilers, company vehicles, and industrial processes.
Designers can work towards reducing Scope 1 emissions by:
Opting for Sustainable Transportation: Companies can transition company-owned vehicles to electric or hybrid fleets and optimize driving routes to reduce excess mileage. By consolidating shipments and using shared delivery networks, delivery systems can further minimize fuel combustion, reducing direct emissions from transportation.
Turning to Renewable Energy: Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable-energy sources, such as solar and wind power, helps businesses to reduce direct combustion produced from their own operations. Companies may also utilize power purchase agreements (PPAs), which are long-term contracts established between an energy producer and a buyer for the purchase of renewable energy.
Improving Energy Efficiency: Improving energy efficiency would help to lower the amount of fossil fuels burned directly onsite in facilities or by company-owned equipment, including heating, boilers, and industrial equipment. Implementing energy-efficient boilers, LED lighting, and efficient HVAC systems can help to contribute to cutting unnecessary fuel use.
