Roadmap to Net Zero: Delivering Science-Based Targets in the Apparel Sector
In November 2021, Apparel Impact Institute {Aii} and World Resources Institute {WRI}, with generous support from the Laudes Foundation, published Roadmap to Net Zero: Delivering Science-Based Targets in the Apparel Sector. Using data from the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and Textile Exchange, this report provided an estimate of apparel sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2019, highlighted the main areas of impact for the industry to lower their emissions, and identified the key steps the sector must take to reduce emissions in line with a 1.5°C pathway (i.e., keeping temperature increase to no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels). In the Roadmap, Aii and WRI shared their intent to refresh the calculation of apparel sector GHG emissions on an annual basis, factoring in any changes in the underlying data and assumptions. This annual update would enable the industry to gauge progress on its collective goal to reduce emissions by 45 percent by 2030 (from 2019 levels).
