In October of last year, a group of the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists gathered at The Well to present their latest designs to the group of judges. The challenge? To create a look constructed entirely out of recycled Zara fabrics, along with a vintage piece of their choice.
Now, some of those designs will be available to the public to buy and wear. The CFDA and Zara collaborated with select 2019 finalists to create a limited edition capsule to highlight today’s rising creative talent in America with a campaign shot by Tyler Mitchell. Comprised of pieces from the 2019 CVFF Design Challenge, each of the looks – from finalists Barragán, Private Policy, Abasi Rosborough, and Alejandra Alonso Rojas – have been designed in response to a brief with sustainability at its core. Utilizing fabrics and processes to meet Zara’s Join Life standards, each look has been created with its environmental impact in mind.
Barragán’s Oversized Trench is produced with naturally grown linen, sourced from crops free of artificial irrigation and any genetically modified seeds, and certified by the European Flax® standard of the non-profit European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC).
Private Policy’s take on a three-piece suit is created with a naturally grown linen and produced utilizing techniques certified by the European Flax® standard of the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC) that reduce impact on soil, environmental biodiversity and fresh water resources.
Abasi Rosbrough’s vibrant red suit is made from an ecologically grown cotton, and the fabrics were created utilizing natural fertilizers and ecological growth methods which are more respectful of water while also helping to preserve seed biodiversity and soil fertility.
Alejandra Alonso Rojas created a Satinized Dress with Join Life viscose – a wood-sourced fiber from more sustainably-managed forests ensuring controlled tree growth and guaranteed reforestation. Additionally, all production processes meet the requirements of the European Best Available Techniques, utilizing more efficient technologies which reduce energy and water consumption and generation of CO2 emissions.
