As a longtime television correspondent and former host of CNN’s Fashion: Backstage Pass, Alina Cho’s access to fashion’s tastemakers is exceptional. Currently an editor-at-large at Ballantine Bantam Dell, Cho was responsible for acquiring and editing the memoirs of Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger, among others. She also hosts the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s lecture series The Atelier with Alina Cho, interviewing everyone from from CFDA Chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg to Anna Wintour, from Alber Elbaz to Alexander Wang. Her latest project, #CFDAxMarchay, a new video series about travel, kicks off this Thursday [FOLO: Jan.5]. We had the chance to turn the tables on Cho and ask a few questions of our own.
You’ve chatted with CFDA Members and know many designers well. What’s your favorite part of interviewing them?
Where do I begin? No matter how many times I interview someone — whether it’s Thom Browne, Diane von Furstenberg, or Alexander Wang — I always walk away having learned at least one new interesting detail. In my last interview with Alex, who famously loves to throw and go to a party, he told me he has one special gift: He never gets hangovers.
Who was your most memorable interview and why?
A tie. Two recent ones, so they’re top of mind. Alex Wang and Olivier Rousteing of Balmain at The Met. Both were so funny and savvy. Their answers were unexpected and that created great energy in the audience.
Your Marchay series focuses on the travel preferences of several American designers. What was your main takeaway from these interviews?
That women like to pack with lots of options and men — not surprisingly — like to keep it simple.
Did anyone surprise you? If so, how?
Norma Kamali. Before she got into fashion, she worked for an airline and flew to London every weekend for four years. $29.00 round trip! I just love that story.
Speaking of travel, what’s your favorite place in the world?
Capri, hands down. It’s the only place in the world where I truly unplug and unwind.
How do you like to travel?
Preferably with a flat bed, my cashmere blanket, a Virgin Mary, and lots of Pellegrino.
What three things are in your travel survival kit?
My cashmere blanket (see above), comfortable walking shoes (Paul Andrew kitten heels or Canfora sandals, depending on the locale), and one great statement dress.
