Ask any American designer what’s on their bucket list, and taking home one of the highly coveted Trova trophies is surely on it. The list of recipients includes many design legends, from Ralph Lauren to Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, and more.
But where does the award go once it’s in the hands of the designer? In the leadup to Monday’s 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards, we asked past recipients to share where they keep their treasured Trova.
Joseph Altuzarra, Altuzarra
“I keep my Trova in my office next to my CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Award and my good luck maneki-nek kitty.”
Fernando Garcia, Monse
“I keep my Trova in a place of honor on a shelf in my apartment. It sits next to two items that are very dear to me. One, a photo of Oscar [de la Renta] that his family gave me shortly after he passed, and the other is a frame with the note he wrote me the day we first met in the Dominican Republic with his personal cell phone number.”
Irene Neuwirth
“My Trova sits in good company- in our living room atop our BDDW speakers with Phil [Lord’s] friends [ie. a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Oscar], underneath a unicorn. What could be better?”
Norma Kamali
“I have had the honor of designing clothes for over 50 years and that in itself describes my dream to live a creative life. Through the years, I have been awarded recognition for my work and efforts for work in the community. They lift my spirits and the CFDA awards are extra special because of the recognition from my peers. I am beyond appreciative. However, I am a bit shy about showing off awards so they are not displayed.”
