Victor Li Fall-Winter 2020

If only fashion shows could earn frequent-flier points. Victor Li’s latest drew inspiration from his international pursuits. “It’s about a foodie who loves to travel—and will travel for food,” he said. When it comes to faraway cuisine, Li cites Tokyo as a favorite for its gastronomic scene and sushi and sukiyaki, in particular. When he’s not in Japan, he’s traveling for work. Twice a year, Li takes a multi-leg trip to Europe: The first stop is Florence for Pitti Uomo; then he’s off to Paris for market; and finally, it’s back to the States to present at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. No wonder, then, that travel has been at the crux of Li’s collections since he launched his namesake menswear label in 2018.

Li has also become a go-to for some of the most stylish men in Hollywood, dressing the likes of Nick Jonas and Matt Bomer. At his Fall 2020 presentation, the designer mingled with actor Yosan An, who is set to star in the upcoming Disney live-action remake of Mulan. Fittingly, An donned a bespoke suit stitched with patches that were shaped like magnolia flowers, a thoughtful nod to the literal translation of “Mulan.”

Similar patches based on Li’s own illustrations appeared throughout the new lineup, which read a bit like a trans-seasonal itinerary of destination dressing. The mix of wearable, packable clothes will look good on-the-go—and generate fabulous FOMO along the way. Among the many ready-to-share, ready-to-wear standouts were soft corduroy suits, including a version with shorts stamped with lobster patches.

Another corduroy peacoat came cinched with a take on the traditional obi belt that was matched to a leather luggage tag dangling from the lapel. A cable-knit duster with burgundy fringe detailing along the sleeves looked positively cozy. And the XXL wool scarves were just the kind of thing you’d want to wear on a long flight (they could double as a plane blanket!). The pièce de résistance was a rather intricate patch-worked overcoat that combined all of the colors present in the collection. The coordinating pants and floppy bucket hat took it the proverbial extra mile.
