What does a “Versace State of Mind” look like? It’s bold, it’s confident, it’s irreverent, it’s glamorous – and all unapologetically so. On Sunday night, Donatella Versace showed Pre-Fall 2019 at the American Stock Exchange with a runway center piece that represented the American Dream: Lady Liberty’s torch in gold.
For the occasion, the designer assembled a few of her fabulous friends (Kim and Kanye, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lupita Nyong’o, Bradley Cooper, Ciara, Teyana Taylor), as well as an army of supermodels (think Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratakowski, Imaan Hammam, Irina Shayk, and Hailey Baldwin, and you get the picture).

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian attend the Versace show.
Sunday marked Gianni Versace’s birthday, and Donatella revisited and reworked some of the house’s fabulous fashion iconography, including many of her late brother’s designs. Punk was referenced via Medusa safety pins with one version of the famed dress (as in that dress). Barocco came in the form of mixed and matched patterns including medusas, zebra, stars, stripes, and the Greek key, while mini-dresses– a once worn by Christy Turlington, Nadja Auermann, Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour and Claudia Schiffer in Richard Avedon’s Versace Fall/Winter 1994 campaign – had renewed currency in acid hues. Towering teased hair had a touch of Valley of the Dolls.
Gianni Versace loved New York – he kept a townhouse on East 64th Street – and Donatella nodded to that love with T-Shirt featuring the iconic “I [HEART] NY” logo against a gold medusa. In fact, hearts were all over the collection, including the final look, a version of the memorable Jennifer Lopez dress, on Amber Valletta, who had worn the original on the Spring/Summer 2000 runway.
It all looked as good now as it did then.
