Venus Williams on Silent Barriers, Diversity, and Positive Change

February 16, 2018

Marc Karimzadeh

Venus Williams needs no introduction. The Tennis Icon and CEO and Founder of the EleVen activewear brand, is known worldwide. She is one of the most accomplished female athletes, with seven Grand Slam titles, five Wimbledon championships and four Olympic gold medals under her belt – to name just a few. The athlete and designer is also one of sports’ most inspiring advocates for women in her fight for equal pay for equal merit. As part of our Black History Month series, we were honored to speak to Williams about hurdles she faced as a black athlete and designers, and her suggestions for positive changes that lead to a more inclusive industry.

As a black designer, what kind of hurdles have you faced in our industry?

The barriers I’ve faced have been more silent, which can make it even more difficult to fight because you’re unaware the obstacle exists in the first place. It’s my belief the best way to conquer those invisible obstacles is to be great. Know your business and have a point of view that no one can ignore.

It’s imperative we have more meaningful conversations about race and the importance of embracing diversity within the fashion industry. Yes, those conversations may get uncomfortable, but in order to achieve greatness, sometimes you have to step outside of your comfort zone.

What are some of the suggestions you have for the industry to create positive change?

I truly believe creative talent needs to be cultivated and nurtured. If the industry wants to create a lasting, positive effect, it needs to promote itself in schools and local communities, regardless of their socioeconomic make-up, as a viable career path. The industry should also look to expand platforms, like CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which celebrate talent and catapult careers.

How do you plan on using your platform to bring attention and generate change?

EleVen is about being better than a ten – a constant desire to strive for improvement. My goal is to motivate woman to move their bodies more, and ultimately instill the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, which includes setting realistic personal goals.

At EleVen we believe best is just a moment – it’s all about the personal journey, and at times that journey is quite a struggle, and that’s ok. I truly feel showcasing my personal journey, which has had its ups and downs over the years, coupled with highlighting other women’s personal stories, will help raise awareness of the positive changes living a healthy lifestyle can have on your mind, body and mood.
