Thom Browne and Isaac Mizrahi – though the two designers couldn’t be more different, they share one thing in common this spring: Both are separately making their mark on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with two impressive exhibitions.

The “Thom Browne Selects” installation, for which Browne curated a selection of the museum’s mirrors and frames along with some of his personal items (ie. a typewriter, a coat stand, his nickel-plated shoes), is on view at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Browne, who is nominated for Menswear Designer of the Year at the 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards, has close ties with the Cooper Hewitt—he was a National Design Award winner for fashion design in 2012.

“When approaching this project and exhibition, I was drawn to the collection of mirrors and wanted to create an installation that played on the idea of reflection—giving the viewer the idea that his or her reflection is a work of art,” Browne said. “My intent was also to play with the idea of uniformity and individuality.” Which perfectly plays into the Thom Browne ethos.

A block up Fifth Avenue, the Jewish Museum features a different spotlight on Fashion with “Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History.” The first retrospective of Mizrahi’s work features more than 250 pieces and demonstrates the designer’s wit and irreverence, from colorful illustrations to iconic pieces such as the pink “cotton candy” cocktail dress Shalom Harlow wore down the runway in “Unzipped” and the Jewish Star of David belt that accessorized a birdlike ensemble of an ostrich feather hood with a black bodysuit. Mizrahi the personality is also front and center in clips from “Unzipped,” “The Isaac Mizrahi Show”, “LES MIZrahi” and “Project Runway All Stars.”

“Thom Browne Selects” is at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, 2 East 91st Street, through Oct.23, 2016.
“Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History” is at the Jewish Museum, 1109 Fifth Avenue, through Aug.7, 2016.
