The Tory Burch Foundation hosted the Embrace Ambition Summit: Confronting Stereotypes and Creating New Norms in New York City yesterday. The third such summit, it featured women from all industries, backgrounds, and walks of life joining together at the Lincoln Center for a series of enlightening conversations that promoted community and female empowerment.

Among the speakers were Julianne Moore, Dolores Huerta, Billie Jean King, Eva Chen, Heather Booth, and Anne-Marie Slaughter, who covered topics ranging from gun reform, labor activism, gender inequality, and more.

Presentations, conversations, and performances took place throughout the day, serving as vehicles to address some of the most pressing issues facing women and marginalized communities today. Onstage, Tears for Fears’ Curt Smith gave a performance with his daughter Diva Smith; there was a presentation on Unconscious Bias and Conscious Leadership by Laurie Fabiano, President of the Tory Burch Foundation, and an interview conducted by Rosie Perez with Dolores Huerta, President and Founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, for her contributions to the labor rights movement.

Each session was personal for the panelists. In one session on gun violence, actress Julianne Moore took to the stage to share her involvement in the cause as Founding Chair of the Everytown for Gun Safety Creative Council. Interviewed by Tory Burch along with Monisha Henley, Director of State Affairs for Everytown for Gun Safety, Moore had an emotional moment onstage as she shared a personal anecdote about how the school shootings had driven her to have tough conversations with her children. Over the past years, Moore has committed herself to speaking out loudly for gun control measures to be taken. “We are the only developed country in the world that has this kind of access to guns,” she said. “When I started the Creative Council, I wanted to amass voices who would be willing to speak to make it safe to speak about [gun control]. It’s not dangerous, the majority of people believe in common sense gun laws and want this. It’s important to make ourselves known.”

Throughout the day, the event also included an on-site marketplace with products from women entrepreneurs affiliated with the Tory Burch Foundation.

The summit was a big success. As Burch stated, “When we clear the obstacles that stand between a woman and her dreams, we can change the world.”
