On this International Women’s Day, Tory Burch has a particularly important message for all women around the world: Embrace Ambition.
Through the Tory Burch Foundation, the designer kicked off a new campaign to transform ambition into a positive word for women—a message driven by a video that features a lineup of accomplished women including Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anna Wintour, Julianne Moore, and Kerry Washington (and some men too).
During a recent interview for The Impression/CFDA, Burch explained her motivation to take on this issue.
“When I started the company, an article was written [about me], and a friend of mine called and said, ‘I loved it, but you shied away from the word ambition,’” the designer and CFDA Board Member said. “I thought about it, and she was absolutely right. For me, it’s hard to imagine that it’s ok and applauded for men to be ambitious, but when it comes to women, it’s viewed as distasteful.
“If we can help women embrace their ambition – whatever that may be, a mom or working – having the confidence about that word would be a great thing,” she added.
