With his vibrant debut in February, Tomo Koizumi became the name to watch in New York overnight. No wonder then that last night, all eyes were on the Japanese designer, who is backed by Marc Jacobs and Katie Grand and more fashion heavyweights, with big hopes pinned on this emerging talent.
For Spring 2020, Koizumi returned to the Marc Jacobs store, where the three floors of were packed with guests eager to see what Koizumi had up his sleeve.
He did not disappoint. He continued to riff on cascading Japanese polyester, and this time, everything was bigger and better.
The presentation itself played to this idea. The designer cast transgender model Ariel Nicholson, who was wearing a black bodysuit as her base, as dressers put on and took off the clothes. If the fantasy creations seem removed from reality, the process revealed just how light and practical these pieces can be.
Nicholson expressively danced across the lower ground floor of the store in Koizumi’s latest designs – delicate bows, veils and all.
Koizumi’s exuberance is contagious, and we can’t wait to see how he builds in this collection.
