Time’s Up Meets CFDA at the Golden Globes

When fashion is at its very best, it is not just about a beautiful garment. The greatest fashion also speaks to the time that we live in, the issues the world faces, the cultural Zeitgeist that shapes us. Such fashion makes a statement.

At Sunday’s Golden Globes, fashion served precisely that purpose. All actresses wore black to say: Time’s Up. Following revelations of decades-long sexual harassment and assault of women in the entertainment industry, Time’s Up is Hollywood’s new anti-sexual harassment and assault initiative calling for change from women in entertainment – Reese Witherspoon among them – for women everywhere.

Wearing black was a sign of solidarity with the brave women who were victims of sexual assault by men in powerful positions, and who came forward to tell their story to impact change. The black dresses made a case to fix the still-existing imbalance of power and pay inequality in Hollywood, and to create better opportunities for women in Hollywood going forward.

On Sunday, many wore designs by CFDA Members. There was Witherspoon in Zac Posen; Tracee Ellis Ross in Marc Jacobs replete with the matching runway turban, and Gal Gadot in a Tom Ford dress and tuxedo jacket. Meryl Streep looked resplendent in custom Vera Wang. Issa Rae and Kerry Washington both chose Prabal Gurung for the occasion.  Other CFDA moments included Mandy Moore in Rosie Assoulin, Geena Davis in Monique Lhuillier, Laurie Metcalf in Sachin and Babi, and Christina Hendricks and Debra Messing in Christian Siriano.

Millie Bobbie Brown and Sarah Paulson wore Calvin Klein by Appointment. On Sunday night, Calvin Klein, Inc. announced a donation to support the launch of Time’s Up’s Legal Defense Fund.

Time’s Up – Hollywood’s new future has begun.
