When it comes to covering NYFW, the CFDA takes a supporting role. The leads are our Members, and the goal is to find new ways to showcase their collections. Enter Tory Rust, the New York-based fashion photographer who discovered her talent and passion for photography while growing up in Fargo, North Dakota. CFDA.com sat down with the emerging and much-coveted photographer to find out about her NYFW rituals.
What are some exciting shows on your schedule?
Off the top of my head – I am really pumped to see Mansur Gavriel, Gypsy Sport and Rosie Assoulin.
How do you handle the chaos backstage at NYFW?
I usually go in with a plan and that helps me tune out all of the chaos. That plan goes as follows, 1. (Try) to show up right before the models get dressed (no need to dilly dally backstage during hair and makeup – too many people). 2. Create a mental shot list once I get there. 3. Stick to the list but allow for some happy accidents. When I shoot backstage I am aiming to get 3-5 really amazing shots, I don’t feel the need to document everything – thanks to the CFDA, I am allowed to do that!
Favorite social media platform?
Instagram, without a doubt!
Who should everyone be following right now, other than you?
@mansurgavriel @camillamengengstrom @rachellou_h
Go-to NYFW snacks?
I want to say cool ranch Doritos because I have a slight addiction to them, but I am going the healthy route this fashion week. I have to keep the energy up! I will probably be munching on apples, KIND bars, coconut chips and gallons of water.
Favorite music to edit photos to?
I usually listen to Chopin – it gets me in the zone. However, I also watch a lot of TV while retouching! I just finished Unreal and Stranger Things. Trying to find a new show to binge, any suggestions?
