Teheran Jones reengineers existing luxury materials for his Exclusive Game brand in unique ways. As part of a CFDA series highlighting emerging designers of color, we asked Jones three questions.
What was your inspiration for your exclusive designs?
My inspiration comes from not seeing anything readily available on the racks in stores that I loved and wanted to wear. I began to familiarize myself with textiles, and I started by producing athletic jerseys, which led to leather jackets and from there, my business took off! I am self-made and self-taught. I didn’t go to school for design.
To be honest with you, inspiration also came from my ability to take any luxury item, break it down, and cultivate my own vision. I wasn’t into anything bootleg, so it was important for me to initiate my own point of view. For example, I have a Chanel Jacket that I recreated from acquiring very expensive, authentic scarves that I lacerated and customized. I know that seems crazy, but I took a gamble on it. I knew I would see the return on investment because it hadn’t been done before. I posted it on my Instagram page and received praise-worthy reviews. The jacket has now caught the attention of some very important people in Europe – and I was acknowledged for it. Bespoke is my signature. My clientele is primarily celebrity as I tailor and customize luxury, designer apparel for those with individuality.
What were your challenges upon inception of starting your business? And do you continue to have any?
There are plenty of challenges, but my challenges became my advantages.
What advice quote would you give to emerging designers like you, who want to be successful in the fashion industry?
“Stay true to what you do.”
“Be on time, and never over promise and under deliver.” Lastly, believe in it and love it!”
