The new issue of The Hollywood Reporter brings us Hollywood’s top 20 Red Carpet designers of 2017 –and CFDA is proud that each of the three covers features our Members. Jennifer Meyer is pictured with Jennifer Aniston; Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia of Monse and Oscar de la Renta with Zoe Kravitz, and Joseph Altuzarra with Evan Rachel Wood.
They are not the only CFDA red carpet powerhouses. Also on the list, which was produced and written by Carol McColgin and Booth Moore (the author is CFDA’s upcoming book American Runway) are Michael Kors, Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Irene Neuwirth, and Rosie Assoulin.
They are in excellent company. Others on the list include Raf Simons of Calvin Klein, Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquiere and Giorgio Armani.
The au courant red carpet trend is authenticity, which the American designers on THR’s list are well-versed in.
“At a time when news is fake and Instagram and Snapchat feeds are filtered, Hollywood and fashion fans are rewarding what they see as authentic choices,” the article states. “From Evan Rachel Wood pointedly wearing pantsuits on awards-season red carpets (resulting in skyrocketing sales for Altuzarra) to Emma Watson sporting a lauded Elie Saab eco-gown made of couture scraps during her Beauty and the Beast press tour, ‘real’ is in. Political statement pins, from ACLU ribbons to GLAAD lapel ampersands, have proven as effective in stirring social media frenzy as a stunning gown.”
As Altuzarra put it in the piece, “Especially right now, so much of what you see is fabricated moments. People can smell the contracted dealmaking behind some of the pieces. They can tell when something is an expression of who someone really is.”
