Things We Love: The New Halston Documentary

April 29, 2019

Marc Karimzadeh

Halston doesn’t need much explanation. He was America’s first celebrity designer who reinvented American style with a heady mix of jersey, ultra-suede, disco-ready glamour, and excess.

There’s no denying Halston’s influence and impact, which is now at the core of a new film titled HALSTON by Frédéric Tcheng.  The filmmaker is no stranger to fashion: he made his directorial debut with Dior & I and also worked on Valentino: The Last Emperor and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel.

Roy Halston Frowick always desired to dress “all of America,” a notion that ultimately led to his downfall. He was the first designer to team up with a mass retailer (J.C. Penney) for a secondary line, causing luxury stores to drop his main collection.

The film’s premise has Tavi Gevinson playing a young archivist looking into the Halston company records. In the process, we see rare archival footage and interviews with Halstonettes like Karen Bjornson and people who were close to the designer, including Liza Minnelli, Naeem Khan, and Paul Wilmot.

The film will make its debut in select theaters May 24. Watch the trailer!
