Theophilio’s Edvin Thompson on His Jamaican Heritage and Creating Change

November 7, 2021

Nicky Campbell

With Theophilio, Edvin Thompson is building more than a fashion label – he’s building a community. Since starting his label in 2016, he has attracted attention for his show-stopping designs inspired by his unique global perspective. Born in Kingston, Thompson moved to America at age 9, living in New Jersey and later Atlanta, Georgia.

Now, the Brooklyn-based designer continues to celebrate his Jamaican heritage by infusing his cultural background into his collection. The vibrant colors and rich textures make Theophilio stand out from the crowd, and point towards a bright future for Theophilio. The Emerging Designer of the Year nominee shares how he is focused on expanding the brand towards a more inclusive future.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in fashion?

I realized I wanted to pursue a career in fashion when me and my friends dressed up in clothing inspired by various themes during our freshman year of high school.

What’s your fashion philosophy today?

My fashion philosophy is you should look good while facing your adversaries.

What are you looking forward to the most at this year’s CFDA Awards?

I’m most looking forward to receiving my award for emerging designer of the year (haha), and also walking the carpet with one of my legacy girls, model Ameali Rami.

How does your Jamaican heritage influence your design aesthetic?

My Jamaican heritage influences the colors , fabrication, and silhouettes of my designs. My designs are inspired by Jamaica’s past and future.

What’s something you hope to change about the fashion industry?

I hope to impact the elitist nature of the fashion industry, thriving for the industry to be more accepting and welcoming of diverse individuals.

What is something you hope to accomplish in your career? Where do you want to take the brand looking forward to?

I hope to accomplish sustainable solutions to combat our carbon footprint in the fashion industry. I want to see my brainchild Theophilio showing at London, Paris, and Milan Fashion weeks sharing my personal point of view in these fashion stages throughout the world.
