The Standard dedicated this past Tuesday night to celebrate Women in Fashion with a special dinner honoring CFDA members Maria Cornejo, Mara Hoffman, and Pamela Love.
The event aimed to raise awareness and funds for Every Mother Counts, a maternal health non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy safe for every mother everywhere.
Guests of the occasion included Christy Turlington Burns, Becca McCharen of Chromat, Jill Platner, Isabella Boylston, Julie Gilhart, Nicole Chapoteau, and more
Mara Hoffman, who is well-known for her extensive philanthropic work, was a suitable choice to be honoree. “I support every woman’s access to healthcare, to get an IUD, to ethical medical practice throughout pregnancy and labor, and to the choice to have an abortion,” she said. “I was privileged to have the resources I needed when I was pregnant. I didn’t have to worry about how I might get to a hospital, whether my doctors were well-educated and knew what they were doing, and I didn’t have to worry about if they had the basic supplies to support me.
The United States has vast racial and socioeconomic differences in maternal healthcare access,” she added. “Too many times women aren’t listened to throughout their pregnancies, undergoing procedures they don’t need or want. Every Mother Counts is taking such significant steps to address these issues. Every day, we face threats to women’s rights, making it an even more crucial time to support the organizations doing the work to defend women’s healthcare.”
Fellow honoree Maria Cornejo, a vocal advocate for women’s rights and equality, added: “As a mother and as a woman, giving birth and having access to safe and effective health care is a basic human right. Giving birth is one of the most incredible things our bodies can do. I find it shocking that in this day and age, women are still at risk pre and post childbirth. That’s why Every Mother Counts is so important. I love that they are dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, something that should have no socio economic barrier to it. Every Mother Counts is doing incredible work to help bring attention to common sense childcare, access to community healthcare and bringing greater awareness to maternal health.”
