Before Linda, Cindy, Christy, and Naomi, fashion had Patti, Christie, Paulina, Carol, and the famed Halstonettes.
Perhaps they weren’t referred to as supermodels in the Seventies, but they ruled fashion magazines, catalogues, and runways (though it must be noted that there was a distinction between runway and print models then; rarely did they do both).
This New York season, a handful of those original top models were back, with a vengeance. This morning, Patti Hansen closed the Studio 54-themed Michael Kors show (fun fact: the Studio regular met her future husband Keith Richards at the famed discotheque).
Earlier in the week, Carol Alt had the final exit at Dennis Basso, wearing a gown fit for Cinderella; Christie Brinkley sported a green suit on Elie Tahari’s runway, coming out right after daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook, and Paulina Porizkova showed her support on the runway of designer Jiri Kalfar, a fellow Czech.
But quite possibly the biggest model moment of the week came courtesy of Naeem Khan. For his finale, Khan, who once worked for Halston himself, brought out three major Halston muses: Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn, and Karen Bjornson. It was as if we were back at the Olympic Tower.
Whether intended or not, all these moments made a statement for age inclusivity, and we loved it.
