The Kate Factor: Christian Roth Reissues Iconic 1990s Frames

April 29, 2019

Back in the early 1990s – 1992, to be precise – Kate Moss was still at the very beginning of her career as a model, and a fashion icon and enduring inspiration in the making. That year, photographer Stephanie Pfriender Stylander shot the then 17-year old model for Harper’s Bazaar Uomo, with Moss wearing chic Series-4001 frames by Christian Roth.

Fast forward, and those stunning images of Kate featured on the cover and within Pfriender Stylander’s 2018 book The Untamed Eye, triggered a whole new demand for the frames. And so, Christian Roth and his business partner Eric Domege were inspired to collaborate with the photographer and reissue the iconic frames.

“Stephanie’s photographs are nearly three decades old, but the ideas and emotions they capture — young love, rebellion, curiosity — are timeless,” Roth explained.  “After speaking about her work and its significance to our label’s heritage, it was clear that the time had arrived to share a piece of our history with a new generation.”

The originals are hard to come by. Just one single prototype existed in the Christian Roth Miami archives, so the reissue is a treat for all those who had wanted the Series-4001 for the last 27 years. The Iconic Series-4001 launches next month at DITA flagships and select retail stores worldwide. The pairs even come with a special bonus: the customized packaging features Pfriender Stylander’s original images of Kate Moss wearing them.

Christian Roth was inspired to reissue the iconic frames after the publication of Pfriender Stylander’s fashion book.

The images are a reminder of the model’s enduring appeal (and the eerie resemblance of daughter Lila).

“Kate, during her early years, had an innate magic mix of vulnerability, curiousness and determination,” Pfriender Stylander recalled. “When I shot these pictures, we were at the beginning of our careers. We were young and unknown, and the story plays homage to that — romanticizing this period of youthful innocence.”
