Gypsy Sport designer Rio Uribe was in line for the hedge-backed step-and-repeat when Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg arrived. “Ladies First,” said the 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, who, ever the gentleman, let the evening’s hosts pass ahead of him.

In a way, that moment crystallized one theme of the 2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund dinner. On the eve of this historic election, it’s safe to say the majority — if not everyone — in the room was rooting for Hillary Clinton to become the first female president.

The election was the main topic of discussion over Maestro Dobel Tequila, whisky, and vodka cocktails, as well as at dinner — especially when the chicken potpie arrived replete with the Clinton-logo, American flags, and the word “Vote” stamped onto the pie’s crust.

But we digress. The real focus of the night was fashion and the three Fashion Fund award recipients: runners-up Adam Selman and Krewe du Optic’s Stirling Barrett and winners Laura Vassar Brock and Kristopher Brock of Brock Collection.

Selman spoke about fashion as a quest to build a community. “I have amazing people around me every day,” he said, thanking his squad, including Amy Sedaris and Rihanna, and now Vogue and the CFDA too.

Barrett recalled his origins. “I didn’t buy a house, and took that down payment to found a company you know today as Krewe,” he said.

For the Brocks, it was an opportunity to honor each another.

“In 2011, a student at Parsons dropped out of a class three weeks after the semester started,” Kristopher recalled. “It allowed me [to get onto] the wait-list to take a seat in the class, where I was able to meet my future wife. I’d like to thank Laura for being such an incredible mother to our child and a beautiful wife.”

Laura reciprocated: “Without the drive, passion, talent, integrity, and dedication that Kris has to our work and to every aspect of life, we wouldn’t be here, so thank you!”

As for fashion statements, they were in abundance, from Jamie Bochert in a short Marc Jacobs number to Hari Nef in a Proenza Schouler fur and Olivia Munn in a Tanya Taylor dress that she teamed with shoes by finalist Chloe Gosselin.

Then there was Zendaya. She stunned wearing navy silk crepe dress with white floral sequined embroidery by keynote speaker Michael Kors’s. “The moment I put it on, I knew it was the one,” the actress said. “It has a very mature elegance, but is still very young and very fun. The perfect balance.”

Zendaya had her own advice for the young talent in the room: “Just enjoy every step of it, every moment, and learn and take it all in. When things are happening, we often forget to appreciate it, and live in the moment.”
