The CFDA and Vogue launched the A Common Thread initiative two months ago, and since, raised close to $5 million to help those in the fashion industry whose businesses have been impacted by COVID-19. We received over 1,000 applications from a range of brands, retailers, factories, and more, and today, we are announcing the first round grant recipients.
In the first round, $2.13 million will be distributed to 44 businesses. These funds are expected to go towards rehiring laid off or furloughed employees, making rent payments and payments to factories or manufacturers, the production of future collections, and digital marketing and e-commerce updates, among others. For retailers, this could include paying designers for delivered spring collections.
Other eligible grant recipients will still be up for consideration in a second round of funding.
The grant recipients were selected by a panel of fashion industry experts, including Jill Standish, Retail Industry Managing Director at Accenture; Jeff Fowler, USA President at Farfetch; Josh Shulman, Consultant; Wen Zhou, Co-Founder + CEO at 3.1 Phillip Lim; Carly-Ann Fergus, Founder at CAF Consulting; Rodrigo Bazan, President at Thom Browne; Rachna Shah, Partner, Managing Director PR and Digital at KCD; Mark Holgate, Fashion News Director at Vogue; Guillaume Jesel, Global President Tom Ford Beauty at Estee Lauder; and Sara Kozlowski, Director of Education and Professional Development at CFDA.
