FASHION FLASHBACK

The Decade that Was

December 17, 2019

Marc Karimzadeh And Nicky Campbell

What a decade in fashion it’s been! We have gone from Lady Gaga’s meat dress at the VMAs to Rihanna launching the sheer trend at the CFDA Fashion Awards and Michelle Obama looking divine in American fashion. Here are our Top 10 favorite moments in chronological order.

Lady Gaga meat dress (2010)

It was so good it got its own Wikipedia page. When Lady Gaga turned up at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she stunned in a dress made entirely of Flank steak. The look was designed by Los Angeles-based Franc Fernandez—and whether you liked it or not, it was a moment to remember.

Natalie Portman in Rodarte (2011)

Elegance always feels right. Case in point, Natalie Portman. In 2011, she wore a custom Rodarte gown to collect her first Oscar for Black Swan. Heavily pregnant at the time, she worked the plum-hued number with embellished details to perfection.

Christina Ricci in Zac Posen (2011)

When Christina Ricci arrived at the Met Museum’s famed steps to make her way into the Met Gala, observers took a collective gasp. Ricci exuded dark romance in her elaborate, intricate, and beautiful sheer and net gown made by Zac Posen that we still reference to this day.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford (2012)

White can easily veer towards bridal but that wasn’t the case for Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2012 Oscars. The actress and media mogul a white off-the-shoulder dress teamed with a floor-length cape by Tom Ford for the occasion. The look was fit for Hollywood royalty.

Rihanna in Adam Selman (2014)

In 2014, Rihanna was crowned Fashion Icon at the CFDA Fashion Awards in an Adam Selman dress covered in Swarovski crystals – and completely sheer. It became the most-talked about dress of the night, and Rihanna proved why she is a Fashion Icon, indeed.  The dress sparked a major trend and everyone who considered themselves anyone embraced the nude look.

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa (2015)

Made from more than 6,000 white pearls, Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein Collection dress designed by Francisco Costa for the 2015 Oscars was simply spectacular – so much so that it was actually stolen after the big night. Thankfully – for the sake of fashion history – it was quickly recovered.

Oprah Winfrey in Vera Wang (2016)

We love everything about Oprah. But when she wears American fashion, we love her even more. In 2016, Winfrey wore a blush-hued Vera Wang to the Oscars which was at once sophisticated and regal—she is the queen of talk, after all.

Lady Gaga on the Marc Jacobs runway (2016)

Talk about a fashion week moment! Halfway through the Marc Jacobs Fall-Winter 2016 show, none other than Lady Gaga made her way down the runway in an oversize coat with fur sleeves and a giant yellow pussy-bow peeking out. The look was finished with mega-platform boots that gave this icon true model height. We loved it.

Michelle Obama in Christian Siriano (2016)

“When they go low, we go high.” When Michelle Obama delivered one of her most famous quotes during the 2016 Democratic National Convention, she did it with style.  On that night in Philadelphia, the First Lady wore a cobalt blue silk crepe dress by Christian Siriano- and made a statement for calm yet captivating chic.

Jennifer Lopez in Ralph Lauren (2019)

Was is the dress or was it her abs? Either way, we loved everything about Jennifer Lopez’s two-piece ensemble by Ralph Lauren at this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards. Lopez was the night’s Fashion Icon recipient, and she clearly didn’t disappoint!
