Store Stories: There’s Something for Everyone at M. Patmos

January 10, 2019

Nicky Campbell

After living in downtown Brooklyn for over two decades, Marcia Patmos finally  opened her first retail location in the area she calls home. The bright and airy space, on Atlantic Avenue, evokes a sense of comfort with high ceilings and polished floors that serve as the backdrop to her collection of soft cashmere scarves and fine knit sweaters. In addition to her own label, Patmos has curated a selection from other brands from books, records, and beauty to products, home décor, and photographs. The assortment embodies the spirit of community, which is what attracted Patmos to the area in the first place. Here, Patmos tells us what’s in store for the retail location.

Congratulations on your first store! Why did you feel now was the right time to open a retail location?

The space presented itself to me and I felt it was a good time to connect more with my customer.

Why did you choose this location in Brooklyn for your store? What attracted you to this neighborhood?

I have lived in the neighborhood for years and it has changed a lot. The current mix in the area seemed perfect for me.

How would you describe the overall look and feel of the new store?

Chic and inviting. The bones of the space are really nice – the landmarked brownstone with original wood floors and high tin ceilings and brick walls and cute bay windows. I kept it neutral and graphic with dark floors and pipe racks, gray and white walls, and natural colored muslin accents.

What are some of your favorite design elements and/or products from the store?

I love the mix of “art and commerce.” I currently have a show up by artist Sarah Bird, and I love the jewelry and apothecary items. It was really fun to pick them.

How does the store tell the story of M. Patmos?

It shows a wide selection of my line as well as my own personal picks in items I do not make myself – leather goods, jewelry, apothecary items, textiles, art, etc. These are items that have a story and compliment my line. It is exciting to see that my customer likes the mix.

What’s the next step for the brand?

We are just launching a made-to-order made in Brooklyn group that I am really excited about.

I am doing a lot of in-store events, which is really fun for cross-pollination and seeing what people react to, and using the space I have now because it is such a nice and welcoming space. Everyone says it has good vibes.
