Sofia Coppola Zooms in on Marc Jacobs in Her Documentary Debut

July 24, 2025

When it comes to creative chemistry, few duos rival Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs. The film-meets-fashion pair have cultivated a decades-long friendship rooted in a mutual love of storytelling and style. Now, that bond takes center stage in “Marc by Sofia,” Coppola’s first-ever documentary, set to debut at Venice Film Festival later this summer.

Their friendship began in 1992, backstage at the CFDA member’s infamous grunge collection for Perry Ellis. Since then, the two have remained inseparable collaborators and confidants: Marc dressed Sofia for several occasions, including her Oscar win for “Lost in Translation”; she appeared in his campaigns (on both sides of the lens) and even partnered with him during his creative reign at Louis Vuitton.

Their 2022 capsule for Heaven by Marc Jacobs inspired by “The Virgin Suicides” served as a dreamy testament to their aligned aesthetics and Coppola’s enduring influence on generations of teenage girls.

Celebrating Marc Jacobs seems to be a no brainer for Coppola. Throughout her career she has bridged high fashion and film, and this documentary is poised to deliver just that.

The announcement of “Marc by Sofia” has already sparked buzz, with fashion and film insiders circling their calendars for its late August premiere.
