Snow Xue Gao Brings Eastern Culture West at NYFW

January 31, 2019

Nicky Campbell

It’s easy to recognize a Snow Xue Gao design. Just spot the girl – or guy – in a perfectly-deconstructed suit or an oversized blazer with shoulders almost too big to believe. The silhouettes the emerging designer has become distinguished for have attracted early attention and a number of accolades since her 2017 launch. Gao was nominated for the 2018 LVMH Prize, listed on the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 list, and took home the top prize for the Swarovski & Vogue Talents New Generation Award in 2017. Oh, and she’s already been endorsed by Rihanna.

The Beijing-born designer has now relocated to New York, but she still holds onto her Asian heritage via her stunning use of materials. Ahead of her fifth official collection during New York Fashion Week, Gao shares what to expect from her fall 2019 show and why her Chinese background is of importance.

Can you tell us about your background and why you decided to pursue a career in fashion?

Being born and raised in Beijing with a grandmother who was an opera performer and a grandfather who taught me about traditional Chinese art, naturally, I became interested in Asian aesthetics and culture. Before I moved to New York, I completed a BA in Fashion Design at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and later received an MFA in Fashion Design at Parsons with a focus in tailoring.

Fashion is my form of expression because it lends itself as a form of art that reflects society, philosophy, and business.

How would you describe your brand and fashion philosophy?

I make my clothes for independent women who want a balance between masculinity and femininity. My designs are a portrayal of my life experience and cultural background. I always try to create designs with a special twist and a nod to the past.

What sets your brand apart? What do you hope it brings to fashion?

I am hoping to create a unique aesthetic by honoring not only my Asian heritage but those of all cultures. History leaves us with so many great things, and I really want to bring something from the past and interpret it in my own way.

What was the inspiration behind your upcoming NYFW show?

I chose to focus on the construction of tailoring, bringing new shapes to suiting for women. The inspiration of this season is from a traditional Chinese novel named A Dream in Red Mansions, composed by Cao Xueqin in the 18th century. It also mirrors the history of the Qing Dynasty.

Where do you see your brand in five years? Are there any goals you hope to achieve?

I want my brand to grow in a sustainable way while maintaining its core values.
