Seven Top Editors & Their Summer Essentials
August 19, 2019
Nicky Campbell

Surviving summer in the city is no easy feat. As most New Yorkers know, this season was a special scorcher– with all-time high temperatures as a heat wave took over Manhattan. Given the circumstances, it’s almost impossible to make it through the day chicly intact, but leave it to a fashion editor to make it look easy.
We asked some of the fashion industry’s top insiders for their go-to summer essentials, whether you’re heading to the office or a weekend getaway. Take a look at their selects below

The Row Bare Leather Sandals
Staud Bucket Bag
Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen
Gabriela Hearst Ellington Slides
CVC Stones Necklace
The Row, Bare Leather Sandals, $790, net-a-porter.com
The shoe of the summer is the barely there-sandal – my favorite being this unexpected marigold version from The Row.
Staud Bucket Bag, $395, net-a-porter.com
This Staud bucket bag is so easy, it can go with me everywhere.
Supergoop, Everyday Sunscreen, $19 – $32, supergoop.com
I’m newly obsessed with Supergoop. I feel like I finally found a sunscreen comfortable and safe enough to wear every day.
Gabriela Hearst, Ellington Slides, $590, matchesfashion.com
These Gabriela Hearst sandals elevate the slide – they’re put together but feel totally at ease.
CVC Stones Necklace, $2,600, net-a-porter.com
This necklace feels like a little bit of summer around your neck! I just love how organic and one of a kind each piece is.

Anemone One-Piece Swimsuit
Peter Do Cady Wide-leg pants
The Row Ginza Flip Flops
Brinker & Eliza Love Struck Necklace
Anemone, One-Piece Swimsuit, $235, modaoperandi.com
Lauren Arapage, formerly of the Stella McCartney press office here in New York, and her partner Joshua Shaub recently launched the LA-based swim label Anemone last year. I love this maillot’s square neckline and minimalist cut, not to mention the label’s sustainable practices.
Peter Do, Cady Wide-leg pants, $840, net-a-porter.com
I am really excited to give Peter Do’s pieces a try! After seeing a few friends wear the up-and-coming designer on Instagram, I’ve been following the FIT grad and I am very much a fan of his aesthetic.
The Row, Ginza Flip Flops, $790, therow.com
If anyone can make flip flops chic, it’s the duo behind The Row. I’ll pack these one my summer vacation and then pair them with a checked suit come fall.
Brinker & Eliza, Love Struck Necklace, $168, brinkerandeliza.com
I found Brinker & Eliza on Moda Operandi at the start of the year and have fallen n love with their playful jewelry. This abalone and pearl necklace will be the next addition to my summer jewelry stash.

Tory Burch, Smocked Cotton Dress
Tibi, Bryan Sandals
Kule, The Vivienne Polo
Tory Burch, Smocked Cotton Dress, $498, shopbop.com
Despite being a necessary component of any season that involves rampant air conditioning, the perfect long-sleeved summer dress is hard to find. This one from Tory Burch is the answer to my goose-bumped prayers. Made from cotton shirting with a smocked waist and ruffle yoke, it is simultaneously casual enough for a subway ride and regal enough to write a poem about.
Tibi, Bryan Sandals, $295, tibi.com
I’m very into flip flops this summer, and I don’t foresee the obsession fading when fall rolls around. That’s why these Tibi sandals are the ideal transitional piece. Few things manage to combine bare toes and shearling soles so successfully.
Kule, The Vivienne Polo, $178, kule.com
I didn’t know I needed a whisper-thin knit polo until I saw this one from Kule. It looks great with everything from high-waist bikini bottoms to basketball shorts to sequin skirts (basically the definition of “versatile”).

Eda Jewels, Kori Hoops
Everyday for Every Body, OH MY BOD!
Barragan, Aceite Pleated Dress
Susan Alexandra, Clem Bag
Alejandra Alonso Rojas, Valle Carnation Pink Top
Eda Jewels, Kori Hoops, $98, edasjewels.com
You can never go wrong with hoops for summer! Edas is a favorite of mine and these hoops make any outfit you’re wearing look interesting.
Everyday for Every Body, OH MY BOD!, $25, geteveryday.com
Sunscreen should be worn every day, not just when you go to the beach! I recently went on a trip and used Get Everyday’s sunscreen and fell in love! It’s so easy to apply and doesn’t make you feel like you have layers of lotion on.
Barragan, Aceite Pleated Dress, $845, shop.barragannnn.com
This might actually be the dress of the summer. It has all my favorite attributes: the pleats, the acid trip print, and the sexy yet cool cut of the dress. Would wear this everywhere for the rest of the summer, including the bodega!
Susan Alexandra, Clem Bag, $385, susanalexandra.com
Are you really enjoying summer if you don’t own a Susan Alexandra bag? Her bags are full of fun and are so cute! The perfect accessory to add to your outfit and not to mention very functional!
Alejandra Alonso Rojas, Valle Carnation Pink Top, $540, shop.alejandraalonsorojas.com
Love a fitted yet romantic top. This is perfect for those summer date nights – it can look both effortless and chic!

Teva Flatform Universal
J. Hannah Tetra Hoops I
Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen
Krewe Ward Sunglasses
Teva Flatform Universal, $60, teva.com
I have a bit of a shoe obsession, but to my surprise the pair I’m wearing week after week are these platform Tevas. They toughen up my more feminine dresses, and are so insanely comfortable I can be in them from morning to night. Plus they’re under $100—you can’t argue with that logic.
J. Hannah Tetra Hoops I, $272, jhannahjewelry.com
Since my ears are dotted with about a dozen piercings, in the summer I prefer to wear minimalist, sculptural pieces that compliment pretty much any outfit. LA designer Jess Hannah Révész makes these 14k gold mini hoops that I absolutely adore. I like to wear two on one side for a bit of asymmetry.
Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen, $65, tatcha.com
Let me remind you that sunscreen is a must every single day. This Tatcha is my favorite formula hands-down for its blurring effect on the skin, silky texture, and it sits nicely under my cream blush and highlight. I wear it year-round.
Krewe Ward Sunglasses, from $275, krewe.com
I’m super picky with sunglasses—they need to be as comfortable as they are stylish. I, no joke, own two of this Krewe Ward style because I’m terrified I’ll lose them and they’ll sell out. Designer Stirling Barrett just knows how to create a damn good pair of sunnies.

Rosetta Getty, Ruched Mule
Solid & Striped, The Daphne Swimsuit
Tata Harper, Repairative Moisturizer
Bode, Sheer Block Striped Shirt
Helen Levi, Beach Tumbler Carafe
Rosetta Getty, Ruched Mule, $690, rosettagetty.com
During the summer, I do a lot of walking which means my shoes can’t just look cute, they have to be practical. In my opinion, these mules are the perfect hybrid.
Solid & Striped, The Daphne Swimsuit, $79, solidandstriped.com
What would summer be without a go-to swimsuit? I love the nostalgic nods of Solid & Stripes’ designs.
Tata Harper, Repairative Moisturizer, $116, tataharperskincare.com
When I run the risk of sweating, I usually avoid makeup and focus more on keeping my skin happy. Tata Harper’s moisturizers are natural and refreshing, not at all heavy.
Bode, Sheer Block Striped Shirt, $408, bodenewyork.com
I’ve been saving up to finally spring for one of Emily Bode’s gorgeous embroidered shirts — delicate and relaxed all at once.
Helen Levi, Beach Tumbler Carafe, $44, helenlevi.com
Though I’d love to just spend summer entirely at the Rockaways, the next best thing is bringing a little beach vibe into my apartment. Helen Levi’s rustic, wave-inspired tumblers make drinking ice water feel very classy and luxurious.

Tibi, The Range Ribbed tank
AlexanderWang.T, Color-Block Shell Shorts
Tibi, Scott Sandals
Onia x WeWoreWhat Rivieria Top
Onia x WeWoreWhat Rivieria Bottom
Susan Alexandra, Soraya Bag
Tibi, The Range Ribbed tank, $125, net-a-porter.com
A simple yet slightly forward white tank top is all you really need this summer. Pair it with everything from tailored trousers to jean shorts and back again for the ultimate summer look. The Range is my go-to for quality basics that feel just elevated enough.
AlexanderWang.T, Color-Block Shell Shorts, $295, net-a-porter.com
One of my favorite trends this summer is women wearing men’s swim trunks as shorts. Pair them with a white tank top and those strappy sandals and you’ll be surprised how quickly you fall in love due to their abnormal level of comfort.
Tibi, Scott Sandals, $485, shopbop.com
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you have to wear flip-flops every day. Yes, I know they are trending but if you ask me, a sandal that is both wearable and sleek is better than a rubber shoe every time. These Tibi sandals are my go-to and have been since they first came out last year. I can walk miles in them sans blisters and they go with essentially everything in my wardrobe.
Onia x WeWoreWhat Rivieria Top, $95, onia.com
Onia x WeWoreWhat Rivieria Bottom, $95, onia.com
Do yourself a favor and invest in a black swimsuit that you’ll actually be excited to wear as opposed to one you have just to “have” since black is considered a classic. This Onia suit is the perfect combination of timeless and trendy. I don’t know how they do it, but this brand is one to beat when it comes to swimwear that truly understands a woman’s body.
Susan Alexandra, Soraya Bag, $227.50, shopbop.com
Last but not least—a festive bag. Susan Alexandra is a mystical creature of a human who is capable of bringing the utmost joy to her customers via her now-iconic beaded handbags. Trust me, on even your worst of days, looking down and seeing a Susan bag on your arm will turn that frown upside down. No matter what you are wearing, adding the charm of a statement bag will always make your outfit ten times better, and that’s a fact.
