Sonja Rubin and Kip Chapelle are opening new doors. A pioneer in sustainable luxury, the duo debuted its newest Rubin & Chapelle boutique in Southern California’s Newport Beach last month.

The new store, on Fashion Island, marks the CFDA member brand’s second location in The Golden State, bringing the raw allure of their New York workshop to the coastal city. It boasts 1,100 square feet with an understated blend of troweled content, black oak, steel, and grey glass, juxtaposed with the sophistication and elegance of Rubin & Chapelle’s modern and refined designs for women.

“We are thrilled to open at Fashion Island, which has always been a special place for me. I have made a point of visiting when in California throughout the years,” said Chapelle. “I love the calm and sophisticated atmosphere of the property.”

“Fashion Island and the surrounding coastal community embodies a lifestyle that values our high-quality fabrics and designs, as well as our commitment to ethical and sustainable processes that align with a SoCal ethos,” Rubin added. “We are very excited to bring Rubin & Chapelle to this beautiful region.”

The brand’s Fashion Island location will also present R&C Projects, an initiative that welcomes artists to create bespoke patterns and textile prints in collaboration with the brand and host exhibitions to celebrate the boutique opening.

The designers have always been on the pulse of what’s new and up-and-coming; they were among the first to claim stake in New York City’s Meatpacking District in the early 2000s. Although they since relocated to Madison Avenue, their first step into brick and mortar set the standard for a space that complements their architecturally-inspired clothing: cavernous, concrete, exposed-brick, unsheathed lightbulbs.

Today is no different.
