It’s been four years since Rosetta Getty launched into fashion with her own namesake collection. In that time, the former model built a following with a fashion philosophy around construction, process, presentation, and collaboration. She has now brought this spirit to her residency at Retail Lab at Cadillac House. We talked to the Los Angeles-based designer about having her first retail store, collaborations and the very special peanut brittle she is selling alongside her clothes.
What aspect of your first brick-and-mortar store are you most excited about?
I am most excited for the opportunity to have a physical space where our customers can experience the brand. We are known for collaborating with artists on the collection and installations, so it was natural to partner with Analia on the store design and have it be our shared vision.
Analia Saban created beautiful pieces of standing artwork to display your clothing. What is your connection to her artwork?
I started working with Analia for our Fall ‘18 collection. I was immediately drawn to her imaginative use of materials and sense of humor. After spending time together and visiting her studio in LA, I felt deeply connected to her practice as a designer. The way we approach our work felt very familiar and relatable. With Retail Lab, we are both furthering our work as creators. It’s the first time that I’ve worked on a brick-and-mortar store and for Analia, it’s the first time designing a public space that needs to serve a commercial purpose. I find it very interesting.
What do you hope to accomplish during your residency at Retail Lab?
I would like for our customers to experience the Rosetta Getty universe of art and women’s empowerment along with our concept of a new luxury. I want them to feel included in the conversation. It is a great platform for us to bring our message into a physical space.
What pieces can we expect to see in the store?
We have a range of our seasonal collections (Pre-Fall ‘18 and Fall ‘18) as well as exclusive products created for the Retail Lab to offer our customers special collectible pieces from the brand.
We created exclusive pieces in collaboration with Analia Saban that are a bridge between art and fashion. I want every customer to feel included and that they can leave the store with a piece of art. Analia designed the artwork made from our patterns, which we printed on T-shirts and beach towels. The most special product features a unique body of work that Analia made by customizing 18 all-white pieces from our archives.
We heard about the peanut brittle available at Retail Lab. We’re intrigued! Why did you choose this particular candy?
I wanted to use this opportunity to give back to the local community in LA. This is my favorite candy and it is quite special as it is made by the Dominican Nuns from The Monastery of the Angels. Their monastery is funded by proceeds from the sales of the candy, which is made by hand.
How would you describe the Rosetta Getty woman?
The Rosetta Getty woman is a woman like myself. She lives on her own terms and needs a complete wardrobe that will take her seamlessly through life. We focus on easy elegance with a luxurious sensibility that allows our woman to transition effortlessly from day to evening.
What is your inspiration behind the collection currently on sale in Retail Lab?
For Pre-Fall ’18, I looked at conceptual art through a feminist lens. I was moved by the exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art 1960-1985, which featured the incredible works of Lygia Pape, Leticia Parente, and Ana Mendieta. Fall ‘18 was inspired by and created in dialogue with Analia Saban. Analia’s approach to her own work pushed me to reimagine existing silhouettes and techniques and as a result evolved the language of our woman.
