Retail Lab Resident Jonathan Meizler Kicks off Fresh Year with Some Dirty Words

January 12, 2018

Emily Schultze

Jonathan Meizler is frustrated. The title of work designer and current Retail Lab resident admits to using that frustration, a result of the current political climate, to conceive of his Dirty Words collection, an accessories line that focuses on bold, punchy words and phrases like “truth” “bitch” and “mother f#@%er.” “I felt that in our world of alternative facts, the common bond of truthfulness that unites both the left and right are dirty words.” The collection is not controversial or striking just for the sake of being so. Instead, the designer’s inspiration alludes to an intention to comment on our culture; personal opinion manifested through fashion design, if you will.

Moving into the CFDA Retail Lab at Cadillac House brings a unique opportunity for Meizler, as this is his first brick-and-mortar experience. We asked Meizler about his hopes for his Retail Lab residency, what inspired previous collections, and what new items he can’t wait for his customers to see.

What’s the most exciting aspect about having a store location?

I am able to envision, create and oversee the entire world of title of work from concept to construction and visuals in a three-dimensional environment. It’s a very collaborative and exciting process.

What’s your ideal store atmosphere?

Modern, approachable with a provocative sense of humor.

Any favorite items right now?

The motherf#@%er silk cotton scarf and the sterling left-right necktie.

What do you hope to accomplish during your Retail Lab residency?

I hope to explore the boundaries of a brick-and-mortar experience while offering something unique that will resonate with like-minded individuals. And I look forward to engaging directly with new potential clients.

What’s the one thing we should know about you and your designs?

The majority of our collection is created and produced in our atelier – one piece at a time.

What inspires you?

My present collection is inspired by politics and our collective state of being. In the past I have been inspired by Entomology, planets, decay and artists with whom I can identify through their vision.

Describe the title of work brand.

Unconventional. Imaginative. Unapologetically authentic.
