In the early 1970s, Alexander Julian launched a collection with no design training, but with a mission to modernize traditional menswear through new silhouettes and materials.
Fast forward four decades, five Coty Awards and a CFDA Award later, and his son, Huston Julian, is stepping in to reinvent that mantra for the new generation.
Enter the Alexander Julian relaunch collection, which puts the company history in perspective via modern silhouettes with a twist of digital innovation.
Like father, like son, twenty-three year old Huston – the youngest of Alexander Julian’s seven children – comes to the business with no design expertise. In fact, he obtained a degree in Environmental Science. And just like Alexander senior, Huston shares a passion to create with an “ingrained grit” and “endowed aesthetic.”
Alexander Julian is considered a pioneer at personally designing his signature fabrics and his textiles are included in the Smithsonian National Design Museum’s permanent collection. For the new collection, the Julians are incorporating digital-printing techniques with a lightweight stretch cotton printed to appear like a heavy tweed being a highlight. Innovative, indeed, and perfect for that future museum archive.
