There was a hint of déjà vu for Reed Krakoff when he feted the CFDA’s 40 new members at his house on Tuesday. The designer had already hosted a CFDA New Members Party in 2003 at his previous home a few blocks south. “I am a lot more calm now,” said Krakoff, who succeeded Stan Herman as the CFDA’s Admissions Committee Chair this year.
The new additions to the 500-plus CFDA Membership clearly enjoyed the environs, making their way up the grand staircase to the rooftop for the traditional group shot. “Your house is a work of art,” CFDA Chairman Diane von Furstenberg told Krakoff.
Back inside, von Furstenberg addressed the new designers as well as CFDA designers such as Deborah Lloyd, Italo Zucchelli, Karen Erickson, Mimi So, Tadashi Shoji, Nanette Lepore, Steven Alan, Marc Alary, Jennifer Fisher, Eva Zuckerman, and Gigi Burris.
“CFDA is a big family,” von Furstenberg said. “What is unique is how we are a family and we help each other.” She also stressed the “strength and power of creativity and design.
“It is very important for the world and all the industry to know that creativity is so important. The most important thing is to be true to yourself. Trust your talent, trust your craft and be the designer you want to be.”
Krakoff recalled how he became a member nearly two decades ago. “It’s become an incredible tool for American fashion and it’s something we are incredibly proud of,” he said, before letting the crowd in on a thus far little known fact. “I actually got rejected the first time.”
