Designers Siying Qu and Haoran Li collaborated with Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) on a T-shirt to bring awareness to the media’s mainstream silence on the rising Anti-Asian hate crimes we’ve seen in this country since last year.
30 percent of sales will go towards rebuilding the MOCA museum after the devastating fire which erupted January 2020 to continue the restoration and preservation of Chinese-American art, and help other New York Chinatown-support organizations like Send Chinatown love.
The T-shirt design features a crane, a noble symbol which represents longevity, and words “Born Perfect” on the front with MOCA’s workshop logo woven at the sleeve. The emblematic PXL checker flag makes an appearance on the back with a PRIVATE POLICY newspaper header, a signature of the brand’s “news report” design process as constant commentators of politics and cultural movements.
Their recent Fall 2021 collection on RUNWAY360 retold the epic stories of the Chinese Transcontinental Railroad Workers and noted the parallels of racism and xenophobia toward the Asian-American communities felt today. For creative directors Qu and Li, the ultimate hope is to inspire pride for Asian immigrants to stand up against injustice and embrace cultural diversity for a common goal: unity.
