Prabal Gurung Moves Into Retail Lab

November 10, 2017

Emily Schultze

Prabal Gurung is no stranger to dressing some of the brightest stars in Hollywood. From Elisabeth Moss, Taylor Hill, and Candice Huffine to Diane Kruger, Sarah Paulson, and Michelle Monaghan (just to name a few), Gurung’s brand is built on luxury, craftsmanship, and a core foundation of female empowerment and philanthropy. Next up on his list of ventures is a brick-and-mortar retail shop: Gurung rounds out the 2017 class of Retail Lab designers. Located within Cadillac House on Varick Street in New York, each Retail Lab designer is given the opportunity to personalize the space to best represent their ultimate retail vision. Now that Gurung has settled in the space, we caught up with him to find out how he’s feeling about the new project and what customers can expect when they step inside his bespoke boutique.

What’s the most exciting aspect about having a store location?

It is really incredible to be able to see our world of PG come to life in the Retail Lab boutique. Whether it is through custom finishes such as the signature spike detail throughout, abstract and provoking art, or a cultivated mix of special items from Nepal— it’s wonderful to be able to bring our brand story to life in a physical space.

What’s your ideal store atmosphere?

Clean lines and a clean aesthetic while still creating intrigue and intimacy.

Any favorite item(s) right now?

Our signature statement tees, which benefit the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and our foundation Shikshya Foundation Nepal. Our hand-knit cashmere knits and scarves, made by artisans in Nepal, are also a favorite, especially in this transitional weather.

What do you hope to accomplish during your Retail Lab residency?

We hope to continue the dialogue with our existing clients while inviting new clients to have an elevated experience and special understanding of our brand.

Describe the Prabal Gurung brand in three words.

Femininity with bite.

If you could see your designs worn on one person, living or dead, who would it be?

That’s a really tough one! I love seeing my designs on a diverse group of women. I get equally excited when I pass people on the streets wearing my clothes as I do when I see muses such as Gigi Hadid, Kerry Washington, Ashley Graham, Cate Blanchett, or Solange Knowles on the carpet in them.

What inspires you?

Beautiful women with substance and intelligence— those who are assured, empowered, and engaged with the world.
