Prabal Gurung is leading by example in the battle against coronavirus. The designer collaborated with the COVID Foundation non-profit organization, which is dedicated to protecting the frontline workers and supporting vulnerable communities in order to slow the contagion of COVID-19. Gurung has donated 2,000 3M manufactured N95 respirator masks to be distributed directly to New York hospitals and frontline medical workers. Along with the help of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), compliant equipment has gone out to hospitals and clinics in underserved and marginalized areas of New York.

“When COVID-19 began to impact New York and hospitals were in a shortage of protection, we put forth a primary goal of getting critical personal protective equipment (otherwise known as PPE) into the hands of medical workers on the frontline to save our community,” Gurung said. “We were in lengthily discussions with Governor Cuomo’s office, as well as local hospitals to discuss how we could best support their needs. These conversations were very enlightening, and revealed that PPE was a complex and heavily regulated product that fell outside the scope of our manufacturing capacities.”

“With the help of The COVID Foundation,” the designer continued, “we were able to procure, verify, and donate 2,000 3M manufacturing N95 masks, and donate them to thoughtfully selected hospitals and clinics throughout New York City in underserved areas. We donated to Elmhurst, Metropolitan East Harlem, and Brooklyn Hospital.”

Wei added, “It is an honor to have Prabal associated with The COVID Foundation. Not only is he a visionary with a global audience, but New York is his home and where he creates. We share a mutual love of this city and its community, and are aligned with deep desire to help those most in need during this difficult time. Together, we can shine a light on the tragedies taking place in New York to this day, and the lasting impact that COVID-19 will have on the world. The fashion industry can help by helping to raise the profile of organizations like mine, The COVID Foundation, sharing the news of our good work via social media. Additionally, brands can support by adopting buy one, donate one models, which we are The COVID Foundation are happy to facilitate.”

This is only the first step Gurung’s continued COVID-19 response efforts. Gurung has also launched a donation page on PrabalGurung.com, which will support the continued work of the brand towards providing critical protections and supporting relief organizations including grassroots organizations. Gurung also unveiled exclusive designs for the newly launched All Americans, a cross cultural movement and COVID-19 relief effort to support marginalized communities most affected by the pandemic, and to combat racism and xenophobia. Net proceeds from the merchandise will go towards relief efforts in affected communities, including medical supplies, curbing racism and violence, and economic stimulus for small and medium-sized businesses. CFDA members Phillip Lim and Laura Kim also participated in the All Americans movement.

“Unity and support is crucial during this time, whether it be by joining forces with an organization, sharing information within your industry, or something as simple as reminding a loved one that you are thinking of them. You matter, and your actions matter now.”
