Peter Som on the CFDA Scholarship & Fashion Education

July 13, 2021

Jackie Shihadeh

Peter Som – a former CFDA Scholarship recipient – is best known for bold prints and an aesthetic of eclectic elegance. His interests span fashion, interior design, and the culinary/lifestyle space.

In 2007, Som was named Creative Director of women’s wear for Bill Blass, and from 2009 to 2012, he consulted for Tommy Hilfiger, where he designed the women’s runway collection.

Widely known for his love of entertaining, Som has since expanded his brand into the food and home space in addition to his work in fashion.

As we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the CFDA Scholarship Program, we caught up with Peter to reflect on his scholarship and find out what he’s up to now.

Peter, it’s good to connect. Tell us a bit about your fashion education? Where did you go to school and what did you study?

I attended Connecticut College where I graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Art History and Art, then went on to Parsons and enrolled in Apparel Design BFA program where I graduated with an Isaac Mizrahi Gold Thimble Award.

What were the key learnings from your college years? Were there any unexpected ones?

What I learned from Parsons was the skill to create on a timeline and also with an understanding of the market. There wasn’t anything unexpected per se, but for me, the combination of classroom time and then internships were crucial in getting a greater understanding of the industry.

What was the application process like? Were there any memorable moments through the process?

The application was a portfolio of a collection. I designed a New York City-inspired collection — very clean-cut, all American sportswear — with black and white windowpane wool, red cashmere, heather gray accents.

Do you remember when you found out that you were receiving the scholarship? What was your first reaction?

I was very excited—and mostly because part of the prize was a summer internship with Banana Republic. At that time Banana was riding a wave of success and it was a thrill to be a part of that. I’m still in touch with a lot of the design team. It was truly a memorable summer!

Besides the financial aspects of the scholarship, how did it help you during your studies?

As a recipient —besides the financial aspects and internship—it was validation from the most-revered and respected body—the CFDA—that my work was good.

Looking back, what was your favorite part about your fashion education?

There are so many great memories, but the friendships I made were a favorite, as well as being in the vibrancy and creativity of New York at that time.

What are you working on these days? What’s next?

I have my hands in many things! I’m working a lot in the culinary/lifestyle space and also have collections with Anthropologie and Rent the Runway as well.
